Choukou Senshi Changerion Episodes 1 and 2

changerion-1-2

Let’s get this ball rolling with Big Nova Subs’ main release this year: Toei’s Choukou Senshi Changerion! Some background on this show: This was Toei’s first non-franchise Tokusatsu series since Bycrosser, 11 years prior. Interestingly, the show was co-produced by Sega Enterprises, of all companies. Sega had worked with Toei to make Amemiya Keita’s Mechanical Violator Hakaider film in the previous year. The only game produced for the show was a simple one for the Sega Pico.

This series is often referred to as a prototype for the Heisei era Kamen Rider series. The main writer is the infamous Inoue Toshiki (Choujin Sentai Jetman, Mikazuki, Kamen Rider Agito), and the producer is the equally infamous Shirakura Shinichiro. Changerion himself is played by Hagino Takashi, who would later appear in Evolver and as Asakura in Kamen Rider Ryuki. Additionally, this was Toei’s first series filmed entirely on video.

Some translation notes:

  • In the title, “Changerion” is written with accents over the “e” and “i”. This will be written without the accents.
  • The transformation phrase is “Sanzen”, which means “Brilliant” or “Radiant”. Weeaboo-Shogun recommended using “Scintillate”, meaning “To radiate when struck by light”. It’s rather poetic.

The commercial bumpers in the show are also way too short to put trivia in, so that will accompany the release posts. Speaking of that:

The design process behind Changerion was to make a hero out of clear material. After many twists and turns of figuring out how to get that to work, they ended up with a suit that weighed somewhere between 40 kg and 100 kg. It was so heavy that the only JAC stuntman who could wear it was Okamoto Jiro. He recalls that “It was a total pain on the neck”. They tried to get Hagino Takashi to wear it at one point, but it was too heavy and he was scared of breaking it.

  1. Nice effort, but it’s a very strange show – even among fans: Changerion has many complicated feedbacks (got shortened, low audience rates, messed plot, ex-machina ending style…). If I were you guys, I would make JIRAIYA, from 1988. Why? Because it’s far superior than Changerion and there’s a full batch of RAWs AND subtitles from BR fansubs, with dual JP audio, ready to receive the english input, no timming needed (tinyurl.com/mharchive). But you guys decide…

    • I’d like to do Jiraiya at some point in the future. I’d rather translate from Japanese captions over the Brazil ones, since those may not be a very good translation. I think Changerion is a pretty cool show though! Fyi, I’m not interested in the reception to the show itself, only the reception to my subtitles.

  2. Damn – 90 to 220 lbs for a suit that is meant to be used in an action show is… unhealthy! It’s easy to see why, by and large, Heisei Kamen Rider shows stick with torso / helmet / accoutrements set up of Metal Hero.

    I’m psyched for this weirdy.

  3. Well, this ia a great release. All I can say is thank you guys! Changerion was one of those shows I was hoping a lot to watch with subtitles, along with Exceedraft and Blue Swat.

I will be here for your next episodes of Changerion ^_^

  4. You know, a weird thing happened with episode two. I put it on a USB, and plugged it into my Bluray player so I could watch it on my TV. And for whatever reason it froze my Bluray player 21 minutes into it and I had to unplug the thing to get it to start again.

Asking for a MP4 (because this is a mkv problem) is asking too much from you guys doing this just because you want to and ask nothing in return, so I’ll probably have to watch the rest of this on my computer like a normal person so my BluRay Player doesn’t get more fucked up lol. Just wanted to point this out in case anyone else tried doing that.
